The Role of Our Technical Director Explained

As our design management consultancy continues to grow, so has our inhouse management team that provides specialised support to our colleagues and Clients.

The ‘Technical Director’ position created in 2023 is a pivotal role consolidating quality assurance, competence checks, and technical oversight that was previously dispersed across the Plan A team.

Jonathan Leah, has been leading the expansion of our Technical Group since the start of 2025, his background includes senior leadership positions at a number of high profile architectural practices.  Jonathan has grown a team around him creating a new pathway for progression at Plan A, with two Associates now sitting as part of the London Technical Group and a Senior Design Manager in our Cape Town Office.

It’s important to note that the Technical Director role at Plan A differs from traditional architectural counterparts, as it doesn’t involve the compliance and quality review of architectural design deliverables. Instead, Jonathan’s responsibilities align more closely with the broader concept of ‘Technical Director,’ he and his team focus on strategic guidance and direction for all technical aspects of Plan A’s service delivery.

This includes:

>Continuous Improvement: Carrying out regular Project Reviews and sharing Lessons Learnt with colleagues and Clients for ongoing quality enhancement.
>Bid Support: Ensuring that Lessons Learnt and our increasing project knowledge base is informing our bid process and submittals.
>Client Support: Offering high-level strategic guidance to our valued clients.
>Knowledge Base Expansion: Facilitating self-directed learning within the internal team to deepen expertise.
>Learning Plan Refinement: Tailoring the technical learning plan to support individual development at all levels within the consultancy.
>Team Support: Assisting Plan A Team Leaders in ensuring alignment and consistency.
>Sector Support: Assisting our sector leads with the creation and production of a suite of sector specific design management tools.
>Dissemination: Actively promoting Plan A’s achievements through talks and social media.
