Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2024

Our team had a fantastic couple of hours exploring the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition last week. It was great to see first hand the sensitive refurbishments undertaken recently by our client, David Chipperfield Architects, integrating contemporary design elements with the building’s historic character, creating cohesive and visually stunning spaces.

Once inside the Exhibition we found more familiar work in the architecture rooms, including samples of the ceramic artwork – designed in collaboration with artist Magdalene Odundo – that will form the ceiling to the Agora at LSE’s Firoz Lalji Global Hub.

Whilst the Summer Exhibition was great to see, it also got us thinking about the complex planning and co-ordination required in Gallery and Museum Design:

âš– Balancing aesthetics and functionality: Creating spaces that are visually appealing while meeting the practical needs of exhibitions, visitors, and artworks requires a delicate balance and expertise.

🛠 Technical considerations: Managing factors like lighting, climate control, security, and accessibility requires in-depth knowledge and close coordination across multiple disciplines.

🔄 Dynamic requirements: Exhibitions are constantly changing, meaning spaces must be flexible and adaptable, necessitating innovative design solutions and future proofing.
