The Standard Hotel, London, UK

The project’s ambition set to refurbish the eight-storey 1970s Camden Town Hall Annex office building into a 270-bedroom hotel. It became the first Standard Hotel outside the United States.

The ground floor accommodates the hotel reception, bar and restaurant. The new garden to the south re-engages the building with its local context and provides a tranquil escape from Euston Road. Three new storeys have been added on top of the building. Two provide further bedrooms, and the top floor is dedicated to a new restaurant and bar, with a roof terrace bar above.

Plan A’s Key Responsibilities

  • Plan A were initially asked to carry out a design management audit which then lead to the traditional Design Management role.
  • We identified scope gaps between the consultant team and the main contractor, how these gaps came about, and what measures would be taken to mitigate the risk.
  • Set up design management documentation including trackers, execution plans, and regular progress reports.
  • Documented changes, produced impact assessments, and kept the overall design schedule on track.
  • Project: The Standard Hotel, London, UK

  • Sector: Hospitality

  • Architect: Orms Designers & Architects

  • Client: Crosstree Real Estate Partners

  • Structural engineering: HTS

  • MEP engineering: Arup

  • Plan A Appointed: RIBA Stage 5

Introduced by a mutual contact, we brought Plan A in to assist us in managing a complex project with multiple designers, contractors and phasing. There were a large number of interfaces and part of their role was to ensure clarity across all information, identifying when it would be issued and managing the process to meet agreed deadlines. Their professional, personable and diligent input enabled us to focus on the design itself, ensure we were commercially protected, and that the contractor was issued with coordinated and relevant design information.
