Meet our Graduates

  • George

Ellie Smith Senior Design Manager

I’m really grateful for all the support Plan A has provided in developing my career, not just as a Design Manager, but also in engaging with external activities like giving talks, participating in business development, and getting involved in school and university initiatives.

I started my journey with Plan A in 2018 while studying Architectural Engineering & Design Management at Loughborough University. I met Jennifer Sale at the careers fair, and I was immediately drawn to Plan A’s emphasis on architecture rather than the typical contractor roles. It felt like the perfect fit, offering the chance to work on impressive projects in a supportive, close-knit environment. My year-long placement was incredibly valuable; I learned a lot from my colleagues and made the most of every professional development opportunity, which helped me decide to join the team as a graduate.

Over the past five years, I’ve gained a wealth of experience across various sectors, contributing to complex projects like the HS2 Euston Station in London. Recently, I was promoted to Senior Design Manager, where I now lead training for new hires, including our latest apprentice, and help recruit new graduates. I’m really looking forward to my next adventure as I prepare to move to our Cape Town office, where I’ll take on a training and quality lead role—an exciting new chapter in my career!

George Birch Design Manager

Since graduating university, Plan A have given me a head start in my career, fast-tracking me to high-level management activities that test and enhance my problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

I joined Plan A in 2022 after earning an Architecture degree from the University of Cambridge. At a careers fair, I met Jennifer Sale and my senior classmate Gail Lewis, who shared their positive experiences of working and developing their careers at Plan A. The company’s involvement in the Architecture industry, a field I continue to find fascinating, along with their strategic and managerial focus rather than design, aligned perfectly with my strengths and interests.

In the couple years since joining, I have had the opportunity to work on groundbreaking megaprojects that present previously unheard-of challenges and opportunities. I have engaged with specialist consultants from diverse backgrounds and travelled internationally to meet with client teams. Recently, I have been leading Plan A’s Charity Council and was proud to help organise a successful client charity quiz to raise money for One To One Africa.

Your Journey at Plan A

1. Induction

The ongoing training and investment into the learning and development of our team is at the centre of what we do. New team members will be immersed in our ways of working via a comprehensive induction programme over the first couple of months at Plan A. This induction comprises a series of training sessions led by other members of our team; it’s a great way to get to know each other, learn from those around you and gain confidence with our tools. You will be joining a welcoming and supportive environment, surrounded by a friendly and collaborative team.

2. Getting started

We work on many of the world’s most exciting and high-profile projects with incredible architects and designers. Our project teams are set up so that new staff benefit from 1:1 training from their project lead in addition to our wider structured training plan. Our internal company structure means all new starters are assigned a ‘team lead’ who is responsible for their personal development and pastoral care. Our mentoring scheme, and regular 1:1 coaching for senior team members provides ongoing guidance for professional and personal advancement.

3. Ongoing learning

Our training initiatives are designed to extend well beyond the induction period, offering ongoing learning and development. Our Technical Director spearheads our tailored CPD approach, with weekly CPDs held by the team or external consultants on a range of topics including design management tools, industry knowledge, the sectors we typically work in, business and soft skills, diversity, mental health and wellness. We aim to achieve 25 hours per year for each member of our team and boost these hours with paid external CPDs, talks, networking/BD events and conferences.

4. Professional development

We value promoting from within and we put measures and opportunities in place to facilitate that. We have a number of working groups and sector teams that everyone is encouraged to participate in and aid their ongoing development; whether it’s the hospitality sector or our sustainability group. There is a budget for any team member who wishes to complete a course or degree and we actively encourage the team to shape their career paths in the direction they choose and put their own stamp on the role.

Plan BEE Apprentice Scheme

As the first independent design management consultancy, we are passionate about sharing the benefits of Design Management as a fulfilling career. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of talent in the built environment.

As proud partners of the PlanBEE (Built Environment Education) Apprenticeship programme in London, we provide young individuals with a unique opportunity to explore various roles within our industry while earning a full-time salary. Throughout their journey, apprentices will work toward a Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, equipping them with valuable knowledge and skills.

Over the course of two years, apprentices will undertake six diverse placements (Plan A being one of them), gaining hands-on experience in areas such as design management, architecture, quantity surveying, engineering, and project management. This comprehensive exposure not only enhances their practical skills but also fosters a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of the built environment. We believe that by investing in apprentices, we are contributing to a sustainable future for the industry.
