Embodied Carbon: The Importance of Early Design Decisions
At Plan A Consultants, one of our responsibilities is to ensure that all sustainability opportunities are identified and integrated in the design programme for maximum benefit – which is why we’re always eager to learn from industry leaders.
We were fortunate to have Joe Jack Williams from Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBStudios), a thought leader in sustainable design, join us for one of our CPD sessions last week to discuss Embodied Carbon.
His insights highlighted the critical role that early-stage design decisions play in a building’s overall sustainability. Joe Jack explained how massing, structural grid spans, and efficient core layouts can significantly reduce a building’s carbon footprint. He stressed the importance of modelling and testing operational energy, life cycle embodied carbon, and whole life carbon as part of the architectural feasibility studies from the outset.
Another key takeaway from his talk was the need for ongoing research into sustainable low energy materials, as well as collaboration across the industry to drive meaningful change. It’s clear that the future of sustainable design hinges on knowledge sharing and strong partnerships throughout the industry.
